Located in Xuhui District and was once called “Route Ferguson”, Wukang road is honored as a “celebrity road” which gathered history of Shanghai for hundreds of year.
Wukang Road

In 1914, Wukang Road was formally classified as French Concession. People who lived there were all officers and administrators sent from different western countries while Chinese citizens were not allowed to enter.

In 1937, Songhu War broke out, and after 3-month fight, Shanghai was captured by Japanese troops. Wukang Road-centered French Concession was separated for 4 years. The concession offered a relatively safe place for rich men and officers. They started to build alleys and shikumen which led Wukang Road to a new evolution period.

In 1943, French government announced to give up their concession.  Wang puppet government seized the chance to take over the concession and changed it to “Shanghai 8th District”. Even so, nobody admitted him as well as his government. Therefore, to be accepted by the public, after listening to opinions, Wang decided to rename the roads to the name of provinces and cities of China.
