The reason I like the Bund

I am a  backpacker and love couchsurfing. Up to now, I have been to around 20 European cities. I have been to the Sahara for four days and was 'thrown' to a widerness by a local driver; I've met a very nice couchfurfing host in Edinburgh; when I travelled in Beijing, I met several guys from Denmark and warm-heartedly became their tour guide.

  Of course the Bund at night! 

  The first time I came to Shanghai was for the New Year's Day, and unfortunately  met with the trampling event at that time. 

  Later, I went to the Rockbund Art Museum and studied a lecture of the development of the Bund. I was totally attracted by the history of each constructions and their designs. Although I haven't studied a lot on constructions, I knew most origins from the Bund No.1 to No.18. Therefore, every time my friends come, I will take them walk along the Bund at night to appreciate the constructions and the beauty of the nightview. 

  

  Personally, I prefer the No.2 Waldorf best which used to be British Tai-pan. As Noel Barber said: If you come to Shanghai without an invitation to go to the British Tai-pan for a cup of bitter gin, then your travel to Shanghai is not complete.

  This is the website of Rockbund Art Museum. For me, this is a place worth visiting where many exhibitons, lectures or shows held here. One can check the schedule on the website.

  The museum open from Tuesday to Sunday, 10:00-18:00.

 2. Waldorf is also a good place for afternoon tea. Their red velvet cake is quite famous. Remember make a reservation or arrive there earlier since there are only 12 tables of river view.

  This interesting dinner tour starts from the Nanjing East metro station. 

  We'll first try some typical Shanghainese dishes which tend to be sweeter and oilier than in other parts of China, including famous lion's head meatball, stir fried rice cake and crispy spring rolls, etc. Don't eat too much, because we have other arrangement.

  

  Locals call them Benbangcai referring to authentic Shanghai home-style cooking.

    

  Walking along the street to digest the food, we will go to the most important stop of our trip--HaiDiLao Hot Pot, a ridiculously popular recent transplant from Sichuan. HaiDiLao offers an extensive sauce dipping bar where you can make your dipping sauce with minced garlic, chives, chili oil, cilantro or scallion. After that you can mix your own sauce to dip with beef ,lamb ,mutton ,shrimp skewers or veggies like shiitake mushroom, sliced lotus, spinach or potatoes. Try to find your limit of spice tolerance from non spicy soup to ultra spicy one with Sichuan peppercorn .

  What's more, you can also appreciate traditional performances there.

   Shanghai born and Shanghai grown makes me not only be familiar with the city but also can “smell” those changes with my instinct. 

绿皮     Hanyuan Bookstore

  Antique funiture, old-fashion decoration-this is Han yuan Bookstore.

  Deke Erh and Tess Johnston co-founded the bookstore in 1994. Books here are almost in English version and most of them belong to Deke Erh's personal collection. This means you can only read them in the bookstore, but you cannot buy or bring them home. 

  Coffee, tea and snacks are sold there. During your visit, our local may introduce relative knowledge about Chinese tea, including how they are made and how to judge their level.

绿皮     Duolun Road and 1933

  Duolun Road, which is famous for its’ taste in culture, mainly refer to its’ celebrities’ left house, and restaurants. When dusk comes, we could walk to the 1933 Old Millfun.

  Different from those shiny buildings along the bund, the 1933 Old Factory is not that realized by people, as a master piece in architecture. But, almost no one could reject its’ glamorous and diligence when he/she see it by person.

  In briefing, it was originally a slaughterhouse. There were three in total had that high level architectural achievement in the world, and 1933 is now the only one reserved among its kind.
